Government of Canada Building

The 1936 Federal Building merits distinction because of it’s architectural typicality, its contribution to the character of the area and its integrity. This Art Deco building with 4 storey central tower was built as a part of a Depression-era program to create employment and improve and consolidate the accommodation of federal government services. The modestly scaled and inexpensively decorated structure was erected on a prominent and prestigious site. The trial and sentencing of Louis Riel occurred in a federal courtroom located on the same site in 1885.
